Allie, did you get to study Lewis in Grad school for an assignment or for fun? I bet it would be cool to do research on the guy’s literary corpus.

One thing about his marriage that I thought was interesting was how forward Joy was. She was “one of the boys” according to his friends and drank and smoked with him in pubs. How cool is that?

“A Calvinist” is a heretic. Boy, that was fun, easy, and makes me feel so much more orthodox and, quite frankly, better than you :)

Adam, I read a bunch of Lewis’ biographies back in grad school, and I remember being struck by some of the same things: the gay friend, and his relationship with Mrs. Moore. My favorite part, of course, is that he married a Jewish convert.

He WAS interested in Chesterton and greatly appreciated his sense of irony, wit, history, and knowledge. The two were kindrid spirits even though the occupied slightly different times.

I’ve read that Lewis was heavily influenced by GK Chesterton, and that Chesterton’s book “Orthodoxy” was one of the major events that converted Lewis. I wonder, after reading your summary, if this was partly due to Chesterton’s insistence that Christianity holds two “extremes” “in tension”. (e.g., sin and sinner). If Lewis himself was a man of “extremes” (i.e., logic and imagination), I imagine that idea appealed to Lewis.

Thanks for the summaries. I’ve really jsut started reading Lewis’ works. The more I know about the man, the more fascinated I become. I really would like to be able to emulate his humbleness.
